Stuck or Broken Gate

Gate won't open, won't close or stopped responding? Here is what to check safely, what to leave alone, and how to get a repair moving today.

Call First If It Is Unsafe

If someone or a vehicle is stuck behind the gate, if the gate is hanging off a hinge, or if it is moving on its own, call (717) 670-8837 now. Emergency repairs when a gate gets stuck or stops responding are part of our work, and we take calls seven days a week during our working hours.

Safety First

Before you touch the gate

  • Do not force the gate, pull it with a vehicle, or pry it with a bar.
  • Keep hands, feet and clothing away from hinges, rollers, chains, the gear rack and the gap at the post.
  • Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of the gate's path until it has been checked.
  • Switch the opener off at its switch or breaker before you clear anything near the gate or use the manual release.
  • Never take covers off the operator or open the control box while it has power.

An automatic gate is heavy and powered. Its safety system is designed to stop and reverse it when something is in the way, but a gate that is already broken may not behave the way it normally does.

Find the Likely Cause

Work through the questions below. Most stuck gates come down to a handful of causes: no power, something in the way, a safety sensor that thinks something is in the way, ice, or a broken part in the drive or the hinges.

Stuck Gate Troubleshooter

Answer a few questions. Keep clear of the gate while you look, and do not try to move a powered gate by hand until it is switched off.

The likely cause and your next step will appear here.

Situations and How We Treat Them

Stuck and broken gate situations
Situation Immediate risk What to do now How we treat it
Stuck shut with a car or people inside No way out; someone may try to force the gate Call us. Switch the opener off and use the manual release only if the gate then moves freely Emergency
Stuck open on a site that must be secured Property, animals or a business left open Call us. Park a vehicle across the opening if you need to secure it Emergency
Off a hinge, leaning or hit by a vehicle A heavy leaf can fall or swing without warning Keep everyone clear, prop or tie the leaf, take photos Emergency
Reverses or stops partway Low, while the safety system is still working Clear the path, wipe the photo eyes, try once from the control box Repair soon
Frozen in place or blocked by snow Opener strain and stripped gears if you keep trying Switch the opener off, clear the track or swing path gently Call if it still will not move
Remote or keypad dead, control box works Inconvenience only Try a new remote battery; use the control box or the manual release Can be scheduled

We do not quote fixed response times; when you call, we tell you honestly when we can be there.

What to Do While You Wait for a Technician

  • Switch the opener off so the gate cannot move unexpectedly.
  • Secure the opening if you need to: park a car across it or close a walk gate.
  • Keep everyone, especially children and pets, away from the gate and the operator.
  • Take a few photos or a short video of the gate, the hinges, the opener and any damage.
  • Find the opener's make and model on its label, and the manual if you have it.

Emergency Questions

Is my gate stuck because of a power outage?

It may be. If the opener shows no lights and makes no sound, check whether the neighbors have power and whether the breaker or GFCI outlet for the opener has tripped. Openers with a battery backup keep working for a while in an outage and then stop when the battery runs down, especially in cold weather. If the power is on and the opener is still dead, the fault is in the opener or its wiring.

Can I manually open an automatic gate?

Yes. Every opener has a manual release, usually a key or a lever on the operator arm or the slide operator, that disconnects the motor so the gate can be moved by hand. Switch the opener off first, release it, and move the gate slowly; if it is heavy, rough or stuck at one spot, stop, because something is binding or broken. Leave the release set as you found it once power returns, or the gate will not run.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. We take emergency calls seven days a week during our working hours: Mon–Fri 6:30 am – 10:30 pm and Sat–Sun 9:00 am – 8:30 pm. Outside those hours, send a request marked urgent and use the manual release to secure the gate; we see it when we open.

Gate stuck right now?
